Project overview

The Montserrat Port Development Project in Little Bay, Montserrat, an island in the Caribbean near the British Virgin Islands, is intended to secure the island’s maritime connections in the long term and to expand the port infrastructure in a sustainable manner. The ground-breaking ceremony took place on 21 June 2022. The aim is to create an efficient, climate-resilient port facility that supports trade and cruises in equal measure.

Environmental conditions and challenges

The construction work is taking place in the immediate coastal area of Montserrat. The subsoil is characterized by volcanic bedrock, which is locally interspersed with limestone lenses. In addition, coral- and carbonate-rich sediments and reef structures lie in the marine surroundings. These geological conditions, combined with changing tides, waves and the tropical climate, place high demands on the planning, logistics and execution of the construction work.

Technical supplies from Küchler Technik

Küchler Technik is supporting this major international project with a comprehensive delivery package. These include the COMACCHIO MC 600 drilling machine, around 8.9 kilometers of direct-drilling KSB® anchor rods, two K‑MUNGG® pumps, a 1,000 kN clamping system for quality inspections and a total of 380 tonnes of KÜMIX® injection mortar. The components will be delivered in a total of 30 containers, of which nine have already arrived at the project site.

Workflow and technical support

An employee from Küchler Technik AG supported the project directly on site for a month. His task was to ensure the proper commissioning of all delivered equipment, to monitor the correct application of the systems and to support the construction progress with technical support.
