Lightweight Portable Drill Rigs and Drilling Attachments for Special Civil Engineering

For more than 45 years, Lumesa has been developing drilling technology for hard-to-reach drilling locations, a wide range of carriers, and demanding operating conditions. Lumesa SA in Lumino and Lumesa GmbH in Kapfenberg work closely together. Their product range extends from portable Mounty® drill rigs and drilling attachments to hydraulic power units, rotary heads and top hammersdrilling tools, control systems, and injection technology.

Lumesa SA was founded in Ticino in 1980 and has been part of Küchler Group since 2018. Lumesa GmbH in Austria joined the group in 2022. While the Lumino site has development, assembly, and service departments, the Kapfenberg site focuses on developing and manufacturing excavator-mounted drilling attachments and custom drilling solutions.

Portable Mounty® Drill Rigs for Hard-to-Reach Drilling Locations

The development of the Mounty® portable drill rigs began in response to demand for a lightweight, easy-to-handle machine for constructing avalanche protection structures in the mountains. Today, the product range extends from very lightweight models to medium-weight portable drill rigs. Models such as the Mounty® 90 L and Mounty® 90 H are designed for applications where weight, transportation, and short setup times play a key role.

Depending on the application, the modular drill rigs can be configured with pneumatic, semi-hydraulic, or fully hydraulic operation and equipped with suitable rotary heads, down-the-hole hammers, or universal top hammers. This makes them suitable for applications including KSB® self-drilling anchors, rock drilling, and drilling work at hard-to-reach locations. Mounty® portable drill rigs are also used for high-alpine projects where equipment and materials must be transported by helicopter.

Drilling Attachments for Different Carriers

Lumesa develops LDA drilling attachments for excavators, spider excavators, telehandlers, and truck-mounted cranes. They are characterized by their functional design, low operating weight, and modular construction. The virtually wear-free INOX feed profile combines high strength with low surface roughness. This reduces wear and maintenance requirements while extending the service life of the drilling attachment.

The product range includes the LDA 91 Mounty, LDA 91, LDA 92, LDA 92P, and LDA 92P DH series. Depending on the drilling method and carrier, the drilling attachments are configured with suitable drill drives, top hammers, hydraulic components, and control systems. The modular LDA 92P DH, for example, supports different drilling methods with a single attachment and can be converted from the base LDA 92P version to a double-head configuration in a short time.

Drive Systems, Controls, and Accessories Matched to the Application

To match the equipment to the drilling method, geology, and carrier, Lumesa offers diesel- or electric-powered hydraulic power units, standard- and high-speed rotary heads, and pneumatic, hydropneumatic, and fully hydraulic top hammers. The range is complemented by control systems, hydraulic clamps, extractors, down-the-hole hammers, and tools for cased drilling.

One example of Lumesa’s development work is the radio remote control developed in collaboration with KAISER AG and Autec S.r.l. It can be used to operate both the drilling attachment and the spider excavator. The drilling attachment’s radio remote control can also operate the excavator boom, upper structure, and, depending on the configuration, the travel functions at reduced speed. This makes it easier to position the equipment at drilling locations in steep, rocky, or hard-to-reach terrain.

Service, Rental Equipment, and Custom Solutions

Lumesa performs maintenance and repair work as well as technical modifications in its own workshop. Its services also include spare parts supply, rental equipment, water pumps, and project-specific custom solutions. Various machines and components, from portable drill rigs to down-the-hole hammers, are also available for rent, for example to cover equipment downtime or handle peak workloads.

Lumesa and Küchler Technik AG

Lumesa SA and Lumesa GmbH are part of Küchler Group and are therefore sister companies of Küchler Technik AG. Lumesa’s portable drill rigs, hydraulic power units, control systems, and custom solutions complement the Küchler Technik AG product range, particularly for drilling work that requires low weight, flexible carriers, or custom-configured technology.
